Creating a 21st-century learning environment requires more than contemporary architecture. When North Vancouver School District planned the new Handsworth Secondary School, they needed building systems sophisticated enough to support diverse educational programs while maintaining the reliability essential for institutional facilities. Somatic delivered the $8 million mechanical and plumbing installation for this impressive 140,000 square foot facility.

Engineering for Educational Excellence

Handsworth Secondary opened in September 2022 as a state-of-the-art facility designed for 1,400 students and 110 staff. The building's 31 classrooms and 9 specialized science laboratories each required precise environmental controls, with our mechanical and plumbing systems supporting optimal learning conditions and safety requirements.

Our mechanical and plumbing installations needed to accommodate the facility's diverse program requirements, from the technical demands of science labs requiring specialized ventilation and safety systems, to the unique environmental needs of music and dance studios, arts spaces, and the black-box theatre.

Complex Multi-Use Design

The school's signature three-storey atrium, known as the "grand commons," presented unique installation challenges. This central hub connects major spaces throughout the building, requiring carefully executed mechanical systems to manage the large open volume while maintaining comfort in adjacent learning areas.

The athletic facilities added another layer of complexity, with three gymnasiums, a weight room, and additional athletic spaces requiring robust mechanical systems capable of handling high-occupancy loads and intensive use patterns.

Sustainable Building Performance

Built with green design principles, Handsworth Secondary required mechanical and plumbing systems that could deliver reliable performance while supporting the building's sustainability goals. Our team installed systems that support the building's environmental objectives while ensuring dependable operation across all educational and recreational functions.

The specialized technical education, arts, and business spaces each required customized approaches to mechanical and plumbing systems, reflecting the school's commitment to providing students with modern, industry-relevant learning environments.

Project Completion and Impact

With final landscaping and playfields completed by July 2023, Handsworth Secondary stands as a model for modern educational facility design. The successful integration of complex MEP systems throughout this sleek, future-ready school demonstrates Somatic's expertise in institutional projects where system reliability directly impacts educational outcomes.

This project showcases our ability to engineer building systems that foster creativity, collaboration, and community in educational environments.
